La Herradurra

The beach at La Herradura (“The Horseshoe”) takes its name from the 1 to 2 km long, crescent shaped beach sheltered by twin headlands. It is typical of the area, being a mixture of flat pebbles with some sand. Sailboards, sailing dinghies, and a few pedalos are available for hire in high season, and there are also scuba diving facilities. Beach bars (chiringuita) are scattered along the whole beach providing good food, and a few beach umbrellas and sun loungers for hire for those wanting no more than to laze the day away.

A selection of restaurants line parts of the long beach and some of the old village back streets. Some have Italian or Chinese cuisines but many specialise in fresh fish and Spanish dishes, such as paella. There are a few offering “English” dishes such as roast meats.

La Herradura offers a variety of shops, supermarkets, bakers and a covered market selling fresh produce. There are no discotheques or loud music bars so evenings are centred about restaurants and comfortable bars. More lively entertainment can be found in the adjacent town of Almuñécar, which is a short drive, or bus or taxi ride away. It has a castle, roman remains, museum, and a wide selection of shops (see www.almunecar.com)

Other local places of interest are Nerja, (10 minutes drive) with its Balcon de Europe and Caves, and the provincial capital of Granada (50 to 60 minutes drive) with the Alhambra Garden and Palace, shops, Moorish quarter, and monastery. These are served by bus directly from La Herradura.

Golf courses can be found at Rincon de la Victoria (18 holes & 40 minutes drive), Motril (2x9 hole & 20 minutes drive) and Granada (18 holes and 50 minutes drive). In winter skiing can be found in the Sierra Nevada National Park, south of Granada, while in summer this is a good area for walking.
